Kyle Hepp: Where Would You Take Someone from the Travel Channel?

  • Isabel · 11 months ago
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is so amazing!! I'm so happy for (and totally jealous of) you! You're such a renaissance woman.

I'm trying to think of some places, but just off the top of my head I can think of 2 cool not snotty Chilean bars and a movie theater in the center of the city:

    1. La Chimenea

    2. El Bucanero

    3. Cine Arte Alameda (also Normandie)

I'm going to ask one of my arty friends what he thinks, too but good luck!!
  • Sara · 11 months ago
    Cool.

I like El observatorio cafe in Lastarria also cafe escondido except I always forget where it is maybe because it's escondido.

Orrego Luco? They have good happy hour specials.

Oh and that sculpture park by Pedro de Valdivia.
  • Flo · 11 months ago
At the base of Cerro San Cristóbal, entering via Pedro de Valdivia Norte, is a great Chilean-Italian restaurant: Divertimento. It is beautiful, really good, and not very expensive.
It is close to the sculpture park mentioned in the comment above.

Another quite picturesque place to visit is the Mercado Central (metro station Cal Y Canto), but beware of eating raw seafood. And try to keep a low profile or ask S. to go with you.

    Good luck!

    Hey Mamacita,

I just this week wrote blog posts on Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales. I listed my favorite things. Also, I can provide you more info if you'd like.

Although I'm a just newbie, I would recommend the Cerro Santa Lucia.

    KYLE! AMAZING!!!!! :)

    I Love this place:

    http://www.boulevardlavaud.cl/

I think "El sofá" is a rather insane and fun bar... http://www.sofa.cl/ it's very aesthetic.

There's a street in el centro near the Museo Bellas Artes that has some really amazing shops. I wish I knew which one it is but it's by the bright orange house.

You could take her to the Chorillanas place on Rancagua (if she's not going to the onein Valpo) and I also LOVE this one café -- have no idea what its name is-- on Julio Prado somewhere around Bilbao.

Then there's my favorite café in el Centro Primmo Café http://www.circuloprimmo.blogspot.com/

    ...
don't forget the microbrewery on the plaza ñuñoa, i forget what that place is called.

Wow... it seems like all i do is drink... cultural things? Um museo de la moda is kinda off the beaten path. Never been there, though.

When I was studying abroad in Santiago my host family (they were a couple actually--the man was 28 and the woman was 30...how lucky was I!) took me to Cafe Brasil in Barrio Brasil my first night. We went back at least once a week for the rest of my time there...still one of my favorite memories :)
  • Mamacita Chilena · 11 months ago
Isabel, thanks, but don't be too jealous...it was all pure luck. I am Flickr contacts with this guy, who happens to be a Twitter follower of one of the girls doing the show with the Travel Channel, and she tweeted that was looking for a blogger here and my flickr contact, her Twitter follower, responded with a link to my blog...I had no idea he even read my blog!

Still Life, I'll send her the link to your posts about Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, thanks!

Jenna, what study abroad program were you on? Your host parents weren't by any chance the really young ones from IES that got a divorce while they had a student living with them, were they?
  • Mamacita Chilena · 11 months ago
Oh, and everybody else, thank you for all these suggestions! I'm going to have my work cut out for me checking out all these places to see where I decide on!
  • Clare · 11 months ago
On Lastarria, I love Berri. Perhaps plaza Nunoa.

If you are interested in Pokemon scene... my cousin hosts parties and knows the scene. It would certainly be different.
  • George · 11 months ago
The place to go for an authentic (if grungy) Chilean experience is La Piojera just outside Metro Cal y Canto.
  • Isabel · 11 months ago
i agree about plaza ñuñoa...there`s several really nice bars and restaurants.

Also, Josè Miguel de la Barra there is a really cool bar with lots of good imported beer just across from parque forrestal. There are also lots of cute shops there like Amanda mentioned so it`s got a really nice atmosphere.

Kinda near there on Alameda right by Aine Arte Alameda there`s a bar/restaurant called something like Gulart or Goulart. It`s really pretty inside and the one time I went there, the service was excellent.

OH and I think Lastarria is a good bet like others have mentioned because there`s so much there (I love that museo de artes visuales or something like that with all the Matta stuff) There`s also a newish restaurant called Lucìa which is an old apartment turned into a restaurant. It`s gorgeous inside and the food is delicious. It`s a great place for dinner.

ok, im not going to suggest anything else because it looks like you`ve got a ton of great suggestions from everyone!
  • La Chilengüita · 11 months ago
Hmmmmm.....well for yummy Chilean food, I'd go to El Caramaño in Bellavista (its on Purísima 257, #7377043).

Or there is Casa Abarzua on Monjitas where we first met....they had great drinks!

I'll keep brainstorming, but that's all I've got for now.

    Have fun!!!

Kyle, that is so f-ing amazing and I am all up on helping you out.

I have to go to "work" so will quickly say that A) I'll get back to you B) i'm obsessed with the discovery travel channel and B) i have recently seen the following places highlihgted on the travel channel (i.e. you should NOT bring them to these places because they've been covered in the past couple months of my tv-watching)

    - El Hoyo restaurant

    - La Feria club

    - Mercado Central

    - Cerro Santa Lucia to show the canon go off at noon

    - skiing in valle nevado

I have a ton of ideas for you but can't write now. I am SO totally jealous and think that this is just great for you and your career. besos.
  • Leigh · 11 months ago
Wow! Sounds great! As for things off the beaten path, I would suggest:

1.General Cemetary (and maybe the Catholic one, too), including the detenidos-desaparecidos monument. I hear the G.C. has cool night tours.

    2. Rincon de las Canallas restaurant, on San Diego near Santa Isabel. Traditionally, you had to say a password to get in, and a friend told me it was a meeting place for people opposed to the dictatorship.

    3. Plaza Camilo Mori in Bellavista...the one with the castle-like red house. Lots of pubs and stuff around.

    4. La Vega market

    5. Club Hipico...except I don't know if there are races on Thursdays.

    6. El Hoyo or La Piojera!!!

    Hope this helps...

No tour of Santiago is complete without a stroll through la Legua.
    hahahahhaha, just kidding.

my fave places in Santiago are:

    la vega

    patronato

(food and clothing are really all you need) The vega would be very pintoresco!!!!

Two places I've been wanting to go are:

    1) el museo de la solidaridad

    http://www.museodelasolidaridad.cl/

Nestor Canclini recommended a visit to this museum.

    2) and el museo de la moda

if anything else comes to mind, I'll let you know.
  • Maeskizzle · 11 months ago
oh and if you guys are in Barrio Brazil Thursday afternoon, let me know, cos I'll be there.
  • Leigh · 11 months ago
Or what about salsa dancing? I've never been to Havana Salsa, but I heard it's fun.

I used to go to a place called El Cimarron in Nunoa (Irarrazaval con Manuel Montt more or less) where they offered free salsa classes on Thursday nights before the dancing started (you just have to pay a luca to get in). I don't know if they still do it, but it could be an option.

i hear busses go to valpo until late ;-)

haha i have no idea. the only time i was living in santiago for a short period of time we had an estufa, which pretty much won me over.

thats awesome though, check back with the story of what happens
  • Mamacita Chilena · 11 months ago
You all ROCK! I wish I could give you all a prize...these are great ideas. And I haven't been to some of these places myself wherever I don't go with Shira, I'll still have a whole new list of fun spots in Santiago to check out.
  • Jenna · 11 months ago
    I was through SIT...

They weren't actually married, but they did end up breaking up a bit later. Who knows--maybe it's the same people :)
  • Renée · 11 months ago
I missed the 6PM yesterday deadline but I thought I'd throw my two cents in anyway:

    Bar - ClanDestino in Bellavista

Restaurant - Boulevard Lavaud (aka peluqueria francesa)

I took my friends from LA to both places when they came and they really like them. That's so awesome what you get to do! Have fun!
  • Anonymous · 11 months ago
I once watched a travel show where they briefly showed Santiago, but I think all they showed was a cemetery...

I don't think a tour around Santiago is complete without seeing the city from Cerro San Cristobal!
